Butterfield Machine specializes in designing products for consumers that care about quality, craftsmanship, and simplicity. Their meticulously hand-crafted items are made to be durable and have a character in a society that would rather throw away than have something that lasts. Their fire piston is a testament to this philosophy.

A fire piston is a clever fire starting tool with its origins dating back to the 1700’s. Used most commonly for camping or hiking, it has recently found a resurgence in emergency packs or “go-bags”. Their version is machined from a solid piece of 6061 aluminum, with brass end caps on each end with a small liquid-filled compass and lanyard made from 15″ of 550 FireCord.  Heat is made by rapidly compressing air which can be used to light kindling.

In our backyard tests, the fire piston worked extremely well, generating enough heat almost instantaneously to light our fire pit and even a charcoal barbecue with ease. One thing that is obvious – is the craftmanship; we honestly believe that this is built last a lifetime and with three variations on the device available, all machined from different combinations of colors and metals, it makes a great gift for the outdoorsman or woman.
